Are We Ready?
A Psalm of Dave
By Dave Everly
2/1/24
Are we ready, Lord, for what You have for us?
We say we are, we want to be, I think.
Yet we still tinker and him-and-haw while we kick the tires.
Over analysis of systems and methods
Deprive us of diligent reckless pursuit of that which cost You every thing.
The disciples, all martyrs, except for the one in exile,
Are men who we perpetually judge as doubters and deniers,
While our every moment reveals the motives of our hearts.
We play this game, waiting for perfect conditions,
Always asking questions and trying to get to the point
Where we’re ready to give all, forget all, surrender all.
Wise investors, we need to be assured that the return is worth what we give.
What we give? Really? Are we actually concerned about what we give?
Holy, Holy, Holy
Worthy, Worthy, Worthy
Undeniably the One
Still I find myself trying to figure out the angle
That gets me in with as little sacrifice as possible,
With the loss of no-thing.
This battered and bloodied loser was crucified outside of the gates,
Tortured and left for dead.
But me, I need to win and associate with the beautiful and the popular;
The successful who, because of driven-action, have attained something
Are the ones I find myself wanting to be.
Blessed are the poor
The mourners
The meek
The hungry and thirsty
The merciful
The pure in heart
The peacemakers
The persecuted
The insulted
The falsely accused
The generous who have little
Have found the narrow path; these are your friends, Lord.
Others, like cautious investors, will be pulled down to the depths
of the sea where the weight of caution will drown them
in the plenty they enjoy.
Man of sorrows, well acquainted with grief
Son of suffering
We are not ready and repentance is far from our tongues
And even further from our hearts.
Silly boy, where are your few small sheep?
And the contrite respond, “Is there not a cause?”
In humility we ask that you prepare us,
And this request we do not take lightly,
Because it will do for us what it did for You:
Willing complete surrender costs every thing
Draw our hearts closer to your suffering
And drain us of the desire for victory.
Surrender.
I Surrender.
All to You my precious Savior
I surrender all.
